Sto let po ljubljanskem potresu, ko se je na postaji porušil leseni stolpič z uro, je kolodvorska stavba končno doživela temeljito prenovo po originalnih načrtih in pridobila tudi nov stolp z uro, ki je sedaj zidan. Preuredili so tudi podhod do peronov. V 21. stoletju sta bila izvedena dva natečaja za prenovo potniškega centra in poglobitev železniških tirov (2002 in 2008). Na natečaju 2008 je dobil prvo nagrado arhitekturni biro Ravnikar Potokar.
