The building in the photograph—today used as housing—was eighty years ago the administrative building of the Strnišče concentration camp. Initially, the camp held German prisoners who worked on the construction of the alumina and aluminum factory. After the liberation in May 1945, it was used to intern members of the German minority in Styria, the Gottschee Germans, and other political prisoners. In August 1945, when Leopoldina disappeared from the camp, an estimated three to five thousand people were imprisoned there.
The former administrative building is listed as cultural heritage, and there remains a possibility that it may one day become a museum center dedicated to the extraordinarily complex history of this part of the Drava Plain. For now, it bears only a memorial plaque, installed in 2024 by the local historical society in memory of all victims.
