The First Photograph of Young Leopoldina

The earliest known photograph of Leopoldina dates from early 1920, when she was nineteen. The dedication on the back – “In remembrance, from your future sister‑in‑law”, dated 12 August 1920—was addressed to the younger sister of her future husband, Josefina Scherak (known in the family as Aunt Pepi). From this inscription, it appears that Leopoldina and Ivan had been engaged for at least a year before their wedding in September 1921.
