Leopoldina’s First Wedding Photograph

Leopoldine Köberl and Ivan Scherak were married in the Maribor cathedral on Wednesday, 7 September 1921. Twenty‑year‑old Leopoldina was petite, and in her relatively short white dress she could not completely conceal her pregnancy. Her witness was Ludovik Purkhart, a gardener and neighbour on Koroška cesta, who likely also played the role of a stepfather figure. The groom’s witness was his uncle Karl Jarčič (Karol Jartschitsch), the owner of a shoe factory in Maribor and the wealthiest relative.
