“In memory of mother, in the 41st year of her life” —this is the dedication Leopoldina wrote to her daughter Poldika on the back of the photograph. The dedication is in German, as are all surviving notes written by Leopoldina.
The portrait of forty‑year‑old Leopoldina Pečar must have been taken in 1941, after the occupation of Maribor and the incorporation of Styria into the German Reich. The address of the Maribor studio Foto‑Kieser on the back had already been changed from Vetrinjska ulica to Viktringstrasse. The photograph was most likely taken in May 1941, on her admission to the Steirische Heimatbund (Styrian Homeland Association).
