Leopoldina spent the war years in Kamnica near Maribor, working in her garden and in the inn run by her former sister‑in‑law across the street. Her son Hansi, exempt from military service due to his disability, was a great support. After finishing secondary school, he found employment at the Kamnica post office in 1942 and remained at home with his mother. The photograph of Leopoldina and her son Hansi with a full basket of ripe pears, taken in September 1944, is the last surviving image of Leopoldina Pečar.
