A postcard of Maribor from the early 20th century shows the western outskirts on the left bank of the Drava during Leopoldina’s childhood. Koroška cesta, the main approach to Maribor from the west, wound its way from Leopoldina’s birthplace on the edge of town to the Koroška vrata in the town centre, passing mainly between small houses with gardens, beyond which lay fields and meadows.
On the postcard, the left side shows the final third of Koroška cesta before entering the old town. In the center stands the cathedral with its tall bell tower, and to its left the imposing building of the municipal savings bank. Part of this building housed the First Girls’ Elementary School (I. Mädchen Volksschule in Marburg), which Leopoldina attended until the age of fourteen.
