Po nemški okupaciji leta 1941 so cesto ponovno poimenovali Tegetthoff Strasse in ji potem maja 1945 vrnili slovensko ime Aleksandrova cesta. Leta 1946 pa so jo neuradno poimenovali Titova cesta.
Leta 1947 so cesto preimenovali v Partizansko cesto, nato pa so aprila 1953 delu Partizanske ceste pred glavnim kolodvorom ime spremenili v Kidričev trg. Oktobra istega leta se je ime preneslo na bližnji Zrinjskega trg, ki odtlej nosi ime Trg Borisa Kidriča, Partizanska cesta pa je ostala neprekinjena in nosi to ime še danes.
