Until the sixties, most of the population saw cars as a luxury they could never afford: Slovenian roads were nearly empty back then, used mainly by pedestrians, cyclists, carriages, and trams in larger cities. With the industrial boom in the sixties, Slovenians, too, were able to afford their first automobiles.

Even today, group photos from school are an essential part of every family album. The serious, rigidly staged school pictures that were once the norm have since been replaced by a more relaxed, playful style of photos, and classrooms, too, have seen a great deal of change in terms of their design, equipment, symbols and so on.

Do you remember the old counter-service stores, traffic policemen and umbrella repair shops? Urban changes in Slovenian towns were accompanied by changes in professions: there are fewer shoemakers, clockmakers, fishermen and miners each day, while traditional millers, miners and wet nurses have disappeared entirely. The way work is done has changed vastly in factories, banks, libraries, restaurants, hotels, hospitals and elsewhere.
