The first photograph showing Leopoldina’s second husband Bogomir without a tie was taken after his bankruptcy in 1936. From the once fine property, the Pečar family was left only with the old smithy and the garden in the center of the village.
Above the smithy, Bogomir arranged a simple apartment where he moved with Leopoldina and her children. Their small room was in the unfinished attic, where the sausage‑makers from the Scherak inn also lived. Bogomir began working in a factory, while Leopoldina tended the garden and the household animals. In a photograph taken in the summer of 1937, Leopoldina stands proudly in a white work coat beside a family of English Large White pigs. To her left stands her twelve‑year‑old son Hansi with crutches. To her right stands Leopoldina’s eldest sister, Maria Köberl (married Schunko), who visited regularly from Graz throughout her life.
On the back of the photograph is Leopoldina’s original inscription in German: “In the courtyard by the well”, to which her daughter later added: “My family with Aunt Mici.” The well was filled in after the war, but the spot remained a family photo point for decades.
