Until the sixties, most of the population saw cars as a luxury they could never afford: Slovenian roads were nearly empty back then, used mainly by pedestrians, cyclists, carriages, and trams in larger cities. Do you remember the old counter-service stores, traffic policemen and umbrella repair shops? Urban changes in Slovenian towns were accompanied by changes in professions: there are fewer shoemakers, clockmakers, fishermen and miners each day, while traditional millers, miners and wet nurses have disappeared entirely.
